Frequently asked questions on learning English with IH Aberdeen

How do I know if International House Aberdeen is the right place for me to study English?

Contact us and speak to one of our team. They will answer all your questions, advise you on the right course, help you with visas and accommodation and make life easy for you.
If you are coming via an agent, ask them to talk to you about students they have already sent to study here at International House Aberdeen

How do I book?

When you know what you want to study, you can book though our online form or you can download and complete an application form and send it to us. We will reply within 24 hours (Monday to Friday). We will help you sort out everything, including visas and accommodation, and send you joining instructions.

What is the minimum study period?

  • 2 weeks for full-time courses (15 hours+).
  • 4 weeks for part-time courses (6-10 hours).
  • 6 weeks for evening classes (4 hours)

How far in advance do I have to book classes?

If there is a place in the English class, you can book on Friday and arrive on Monday. Classes fill up quickly, especially our summer English courses. For specialist, or one to one programmes, we may need a week or more to arrange the lessons.

What is the age range of your English students?
Age range: 16+ (there is no upper age limit for our courses!).
Average age: mid 20s to mid 30s.

How many students are in a class?
The average number per English class is 8, the maximum is16.

Can you arrange accommodation?
Yes – either home stay with a family or you can stay in a student residence.

Can I do Cambridge or IELTS exams at your school?
IH Aberdeen is a Cambridge exam centre - we run exams throughout the year. Please click here for more info.

You cannot sit the IELTS exam in the school itself but we will help you arrange the exam.

What is the deadline for registering for FCE, CAE, and IELTS?
The deadline for registering for a FCE Cambridge exam is a month before the exam.
For IELTS, this depends on availability. We recommend two months because places fill up quickly.

What materials are provided?

Books are not included in the course price. A materials fee of £40 applies.

For courses of 21 hours including IELTS or a Cambridge Exam course, the materials fee will be £60.

What is the minimum requirement for admission?

We run classes for all levels from Elementary level to Advanced. We can run groups for Beginners – please ask for more information.

When will I receive information about accommodation and joining instructions?
You will receive joining instructions as soon as you pay for your course. You will receive accommodation details at least two weeks before you start your course.

Will I receive a certificate?
Yes. You will receive a certificate on the last day of your course.

What happens if I have a problem?
Our staff are here to help you. Just ask us.

Your first day

  • On your first day, you will arrive around 9am, although you are welcome to check-in the week before if you arrive early.
  • You will need to bring your passport/ID, a pen, a notepad and your enthusiasm!
  • You will be welcomed by a member of our IH Aberdeen team. They will check your details, answer any questions, and re-test your English (writing and speaking) to ensure you are in the right class.
  • Then they will show you round the school before introducing you to your first teacher, who will introduce you to the rest of your class and make you feel welcome.
